The Venta Sonic VS205 Cool and Warm Mist Ultrasonic Room Humidifier features a demineralization cartridge with new nano-silver technology providing microbial protection to help prevent bacterial growth and calcium and lime buildup with no white dust. It uses a high-frequency vibration to generate a micro-fine mist that is then blown into the room by a fan.

As an ultrasonic humidifier, there is no wick like in evaporative humidifiers, which means no moldy odor. Yes, the water tank is difficult to fill as you have to turn it upside down, but the quiet operation of the machine more than makes up for that minor irritation. All humidifiers generate noise of some type, but this one seems to hands-down be the quietest one we’ve reviewed.

Almost all humidifiers are tap water safe; however, the harder your tap water, the more white-dust buildup you will get in the room as well as inside the humidifier. If this happens, simply switch to filtered or distilled water.

The Vornado HU1-0021-28 Whole-Room Evaporative Humidifier features a deep-pitch blade circulator that pulls dry air through the unit’s two humidifying filters and then pushes the moist air further into the room. In addition, it recovers and circulates heat off the ceiling to help maintain an even room temperature.

This  unit is backed by a 5-year limited warranty! This particular model replaces an older, discontinued Vornado Evaporative Humidifier and is definitely an improvement. There is no more water leakage during transport (unless you actively press the spring-loaded dispenser button) due to its screw-in dispenser. Also, removing and re-seating the fan motor is much easier. Finally, the digital humidity level control makes choosing and setting a specific humidity level extremely simple.

In other words, this cool mist humidifier is reasonably priced, easy to use, quiet for an evaporative/fan driven humidifier, reliable, fairly easy to clean and maintain, and comes with a 5-year limited warranty.

One thing to keep in mind whenever using a humidifier is the type of tap water you have. Almost all humidifiers are tap water safe; however, the harder your tap water, the more white-dust buildup you will get in the room as well as inside the humidifier. If this happens, simply switch to filtered or distilled water.

The Lasko 1128 Evaporative Recirculating Humidifier features continuous water circulation, which keeps the filter moist for clean, long-lasting performance; increases efficiency, using the entire filter surface for maximum, evaporative-moisture output; will not recirculate airborne particles; helps remove water contaminants; and eliminates standing water. This unit is ideal for large areas or multiple rooms as its daily 9 gallon output is will humidify areas up to 3200 square feet.

The best selling point of this humidifier is the adjustable humidistat. You select the humidity level and the unit will shut off when it reaches the set level and then turns back on when it falls below the set level.

Standard use will necessitate approximately two filters per season. As with all humidifiers, this unit requires regular cleaning and periodic maintenance. The least messy way to completely clean the machine is to do a yearly demineralizing and disinfecting. To do this, sit the humidifier in a bathtub, fill it with a vinegar and water solution, and then it run for about 30 minutes. This will loosen or dissolve any mineral deposits. Then rinse it with water, refill with a bleach and water solution, and let it run for another 30 minutes. This should kill mold spores and any dormant bacteria.

Remember, the harder your tap water, the more white-dust buildup you will get in the room as well as inside the humidifier. If this happens, simply switch to filtered or distilled water.

  • Built-in auto shut-off feature
  • Antimicrobial-treated filter
  • Caster wheels for easy movement
  • Up to 24 hours running time
  • Suitable for rooms up to 2300 square feet

Full List

The Honeywell HCM-6009 QuietCare Console Humidifier features an air washing pre-filter that helps trap pollen, dirt, and dust before it enters the main filter; an antimicrobial-treated filter that helps prevent the growth and migration of bacteria, mold, algae, and fungus on the filter; and a Protec cleaning cartridge that helps reduce mineral build-up. This all contributes to a fresher, cleaner mist and extends the filter life.

Unlike most humidifiers, this one is backed by a 3-year warranty. Additionally, the water tank is actually two separate containers, each with a handle, making them much more manageable and easy to fill.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind if you are considering purchasing this humidifier. For one, the mist is expelled out the side of the unit instead of the top as is more typical of a humidifier. Second, due to the fan, it’s a little louder than other humidifiers, but if it seems abnormally loud, check to ensure that the fan unit was set on properly and that the “noise” isn’t just vibration from a poorly installed fan. Finally, it does not include a digital hygrostat, as more expensive models, do; however, it has a humidity dial so that it will cycle on and off as the humidity level changes. So if you have a specific humidity goal in mind, you can purchase a reliable hygrostat for $7 or $8. Then once your room humidity has reached the desired level, turn the humidity dial on the Honeywell humidifier down until the unit shuts off. Then leave it. The machine will cycle back on as needed and cycle off when the humidity is at the set level.

Like most evaporator humidifiers, this one uses a fan to blow air through a filter to produce a cool mist. As a result, the filter will need periodic replacing. So to extend the life of your filter, try this: every time you fill the tanks, pop the top of the unit and flip the filter over. As water is turned into mist and expelled from the machine, the water level obviously drops, which then exposes the top edge of the filter to air thus causing it to dry out. With time, it gets crusty with mineral buildup and no longer soaks up water as effectively, so by flipping the filter with every refill, it stays moist and functional and will, therefore, work better and last longer.

The type of tap water you have determines how often you will need to clean your humidifier.  Almost all humidifiers are tap water safe; however, the harder your tap water, the more white-dust buildup you will get in the room as well as inside the humidifier. If this happens, simply switch to filtered or distilled water.

The Air-O-Swiss 7144 Ultrasonic Humidifier uses high-frequency vibrations to generate a microfine mist, preventing leaking and/or condensation on the unit. To avoid steam burn, you choose the pre-heating function and the mist then exits the machine at a pleasant 104 degrees Fahrenheit. A replaceable demineralization cartridge (Ag+ Ionic Silver Technology) ensures water mist without lime scale or mineral residues and a quad-band microbial protection system prevents microbial growth in the water base. To completely eliminate white dust buildup, though, it’s recommended to use reverse osmosis drinking water, which also has the added benefit of extending the life of the demineralization cartridge.

Most importantly, the Air-O-Swiss 7144 humidifier is equipped with ITC (Intelligent Temperature Compensation) technology that monitors the temperature to automatically adjust output when conditions change. In other words, this unit measures the humidity and turns on and off based on your chosen preset user selectable setting much like a thermostat does for heating and cooling.

One negative aspect to this unit is that the water tank is undersized and awkward to handle. Once removed, the odd shape makes it difficult to refill and prevent tipping. Additionally, it is nearly impossible to remove the tank without dripping water all over the floor because while installed in the unit, it actually sits in a pool of water; so just be sure to immediately wipe the base of the tank.

Although the tank is difficult to fill, it is equipped with a handle for easy carrying and a full tank will provide up to two night’s sleep free of irritating throat, nose, and skin conditions. Combined with it’s sleek, modern look and it’s state-of-the-art technology, the Air-O-Swiss 7144 Ultrasonic Humidifier is the perfect choice for someone serious about a good night’s sleep and maintaining a high quality of life.

This is a fairly inexpensive humidifier and you get what you pay for, so if you want it to last, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, be very careful placing the water tank into the unit as there is a standing plastic piece that can break off if the tank is not gently placed straight down. If this pin breaks, water will run out of the machine. Second, be sure that you have a good grip on the water tank when refilling as it is very heavy when full and if dropped or bumped into another hard surface, the plastic could crack. If the plastic cracks, then you lose the near-vacuum causing air to enter from the top once the tank is put back into the unit. If this occurs, the water will run out too fast causing a big spill.

Overall, though, this is a classy looking machine that is great for its price.

Sunpentown (SPT) SU-4010 Dual Mist Humidifier with ION Exchange Filter

Product Features:

The Sunpentown Dual-Mist Humidifier with ION Exchange Filter has a sleek design with easy to use control knobs and disperses cool or warm mist, depending on your preference of the moment. The 360-degree adjustable split nozzle offers a bi-directional mist for wider coverage. Perhaps the biggest selling point, though, is the ION exchange filter. It removes scale-forming calcium and magnesium from hard water by demineralizing the water, so you aren’t restricted to using only distilled or filtered water in your humidifier. This then prolongs the life of the generator and prevents white dust particles from depositing into the air.

A common complaint for this humidifier is that water leaks out of the tank. If this occurs, check the size of the washer (o-ring). If it is slightly too big, it will roll on itself when the cap is shut too tightly, so just unscrew the cap, check the washer placement, and screw back on. Also, remember that if you choose to switch from warm mist to cool mist, it will take time for the water to cool as the unit does not actively cool the water. So if you want to immediately switch from warm to cool with no cooling down period, then you will need to empty out the existing warm water and refill with cool or cold water. Otherwise, just wait for the unit to expel all the warm water from the base.

Humidifiers needs water to function. Almost all humidifiers are tap water safe; however, the harder your tap water, the more white-dust buildup you will get in the room as well as inside the humidifier. If this happens, simply switch to filtered or distilled water.

There is no filter or parts that need to be replaced; just regular, weekly maintenance to be performed. Compared to most warm mist humidifiers, this one is fairly inexpensive. You get what you pay for, though, so this isn’t a machine that will last a lifetime, especially with regular, frequent use.

The Crane Drop Shape Cool Mist Humidifier, a finalist in the 2011 International Housewares Design Awards, has a simplistic, modern design and is energy-efficient using ultrasonic technology to add moisture to the air. It does not require a filter to operate and comes in a variety of colors: blue, white, green, orange, and pink.

A common complaint for this humidifier is that the furniture under and around it is quickly becomes wet. Luckily, there is an easy solution: ensure that the water tank fits snugly into place and that the clear rubber ring hasn’t fallen out, adjust the 360-degree nozzle so that it aims away from nearby furniture, and/or turn the power dial down until the vapor stream is fully evaporating in the air. The other most common complaint is that it makes a lot of noise. The noise that it emits is that similar to the sounds of a filter running in a fish tank and to the white noise machines used in infants’ rooms to soothe and calm them.

The type of tap water you use determines how often you will need to clean your humidifier.  Almost all humidifiers are tap water safe; however, the harder your tap water, the more white-dust buildup you will get in the room as well as inside the humidifier. If this happens, simply switch to filtered or distilled water.
