How to Make a Humidifier Filter Last Longer

Humidifier filter manufacturers recommend only using a filter for 30 to 90 days. It gives this recommendation because as the humidifier runs, it take in air through the filter and returns air to the room with a warm or cool mist. As the humidifier take in air, the filter traps dust and particles thus clogging the filter over time. When the filter gets clogged, the humidifier has to work harder to keep up with the demand of the output. Therefore, if you are running the humidifier with a clogged filter, the life of the humidifier will shorten drastically – eventually requiring a costly replacement.

Try to limit or control the following to reduce the premature clogging of your humidifier filter:

  • Smoke – Step outside to smoke – Run fans that take smoke outside of the house.
  • Pets – Don’t allow pets to wander near your humidifier. The best case scenario is to keep them out of the room that your humidifier is in if possible.
  • Dust – Vacuum and dust regularly. Put your humidifier away before reducing dust and allow for the air to settle before running the humidifier again.

Using distilled water is preferred when running a humidifier because mineral deposits can also reduce humidifier efficiency. Over time, deposits build up resulting in unwanted clogging.

If you are diligent and do the above, the average filter will last the whole 90 days of use. Some filters allow for water cleaning but be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when doing so.

Humidifiers Help Snoring

The annoying sound of someone snoring next to you can change your life.  The anxiety of the next work day approaches as you look at the clock wondering how you are going to get to sleep with that constant sound.

How Snoring Works

When tissue in the the throat sags, it becomes loose and vibrates when breathing. Snoring can be intensified when the throat and passageways are very dry. These vibrations occur in around half of the population and the sad news is that humidifiers don’t actually stop the tissue sag from nor does it stop the snoring vibrations from occurring. There is a “however…”

Humidifiers Can Help

Humidifiers can help with dampening the sound of snoring and can also decrease the intensity. By adding moisture into the air via a humidifier, the tissue in the throat and passageway becomes lubricated. When lubricated, the throat is vibrating but the humid air dampens the sound. Think about when wet leaves blow past you versus dry leaves – the sound of leaving blowing past is still there but the wet leaves are much quieter. Therefore, if you want to be proactive and take the first step in dampening the sound of you/your partners snoring, purchasing a humidifier is a good start.

Own a Humidifier for 3 Reasons: Dry Lips – Nosebleeds – Virus Prevention

Humidifiers can sooth dry lips, prevent virus / cold / flu, and preventing nosebleeds.

  1. Soothing Dry Lips
Especially in the winter, those that suffer from dry lips or scratchy skin look anywhere for relief. One method of relief is owning a cool or warm mist humidifier. These humidifiers will dampen the air preventing these symptoms. Though not a cure, it is considered by medical professionals as a way to monitor and control lips and skin from drying out.
  2. Preventing Nosebleeds
In a similar manner, humidifiers help to reduce nosebleeds by not allowing the inside of the nose to dry out. This can occur from heaters and furnaces that have to be run in winter months. By doing so, the air the house becomes dry and a humidifier can negate these conditions. Thus, humidifiers allow the mucous membranes in the nose to remain moist often preventing nosebleeds.
  3. Virus / Cold / Flu Prevention
There is research to suggest that moistening the air via use of a humidifier can reduce the spreading of influenza (flu) and other viruses (cold). One reason why colds are more common in the winter is because the air indoors is usually drier. This is caused by heaters and furnaces as described above. When faced with these dry conditions, mucous membranes can dry out. Mucous membranes in the nose are a protective barrier against viruses and other microbes.  It does this by shielding foreign bodies from coming in contact with skin. Mucous is a type of antibody and antimicrobial. Therefore, when mucous is dried out, the protect layer is no longer present to prevent cold and flu viruses from taking hold. Humidifiers help to prevent the spread of flu / viruses resulting in healthier households.

This particular model is 30 percent quieter than other tower models as its fan blows out moisture-balanced air into the room. With a compact body style, this humidifier is great for those looking to improve their quality of life without compromising space. A word of advice with this model, though, is that after filling the water tank, be sure that it is fit onto the base just right; otherwise, the tank valve won’t open and the water, therefore, won’t drain into the base. So if you don’t hear the telltale “gurgle,” just jostle the tank a bit. The biggest selling point of this machine, though, is the fact that it comes with a 5-year warranty!

One thing to keep in mind whenever using a humidifier is the type of tap water you have. Almost all humidifiers are tap water safe; however, the harder your tap water, the more white-dust buildup you will get in the room as well as inside the humidifier. If this happens, simply switch to filtered or distilled water.

As the name implies, it uses an evaporative system producing unheated, evaporative water thereby requiring less energy than steam or warm mist units and eliminating white dust spray and buildup. To clean and service, simply lift the power unit off the top of the humidifier. The evaporative wick filters out mineral deposits and just lifts right out for easy replacing.

The only complaint seems to be with the noise, which is to be expected with an evaporative/fan-driven humidifier, and the power chassis, which the manufacturer will replace at no charge within the 1-year warranty. It can be a lengthy and slow process, but user reviews indicate that it’s worth it as the humidifier provides relief from symptoms of itchy eyes, scratchy throat, dry skin, and chapped lips as well as prevents furniture and plants from becoming overly dry and reduces static electricity which protects computers and other electronics.

Bionaire BCM658-U Cool Mist Tower Humidifier with Permanent Filter

Product features:

  • 1.3 gallon water tank
  • Built-in auto shut-off
  • Built-in digital humidistat
  • Up to 36 hours running time
  • Suitable for rooms up to 700 square feet

Full List

The Bionaire BCM658-U Cool Mist Tower Humidifier features a permanent filter, which will save you money as it does not need regular replacement.  An AccuSet digital humidistat multifunctional display will automatically monitor and maintain your ideal humidity and even displays the room’s humidity level when the humidifier is off; microban antimicrobial protection is infused into the housing and filter of the humidifier to help prevent the growth of bacteria; and, finally, the permanent filter is treated with Arm & Hammer odor-eliminating technology for extra freshness.

The most common complaint is that the tank is difficult to fill. Due to its height, it cannot be filled in a standard kitchen sink. The cap is on the bottom, so the water tank must be turned upside down to fill and, because of the curved design on top, it won’t stand on its own. However, the built-in digital humidistat is a definite bonus. You are able to set your desired humidity level and the unit then automatically cycles off once it is reached. Additionally, once that occurs, you can set the fan to the lowest setting and it will maintain the level you have chosen with minimal energy and noise.

One thing to keep in mind whenever using a humidifier is the type of tap water you have. Almost all humidifiers are tap water safe; however, the harder your tap water, the more white-dust buildup you will get in the room as well as inside the humidifier. Air-O-Swiss 7146 Travel Ultrasonic Humidifier

Product features:

Full List

The Air-O-Swiss Travel Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier 7146 features a compact portable unit that is perfect to take and use anywhere. Made with the same high quality efficiency as the Air-O-Swiss full-size models, it uses high-frequency ultrasonic vibrations to generate a micro-fine cool mist that is then blown into the room. It comes with a soft carry bag and a transcontinental travel AC adapter and exchangeable plugs, so you can take it anywhere in North America or Europe. Just add your own half-liter water bottle and plug it in!

The bottle neck adapter has two size fittings, but be aware that it is not a screw on adapter; rather, it fits into the inside of the bottle mouth, so insertion and removal is extremely tight. So to avoid collapsing the bottle’s wall from the pressure applied while inserting it onto the humidifier, try using thicker walled plastic bottles, especially if you’re going with a larger-sized bottle. The unit comes with pullout, stabilizing feet, but there is nothing to clamp the bottle onto the unit, so take care that it is not knocked off. As a result, glass bottles should not be used nor should it be left within reach of children. Of course, the tight fit of the bottle neck adapter ensures a water tight seal thus preventing leakage.

The AOS 7146 isn’t just for travel either – use it in your office at work, on your bedside table, on your desk, or anywhere you need quick and easy added moisture. Additionally, it’s incredibly easy to clean, especially if you use Air-O-Swiss’s EzCal. Just mix 3/4 teaspoon per 1/2 cup of hot water and let it sit in the unit for approximately 30 minutes. So not only is it easy to clean, but is also very easy to set up and use. And at only 1.3 pounds, it hardly adds any weight to your luggage at all!

Almost all humidifiers are tap water safe; however, the harder your tap water, the more white-dust buildup you will get in the room as well as inside the humidifier.
